Triple Talaq Bill Passed in Lok Sabha But Congress And AIADMK Walked Out

controversial ‘Triple Talaq’ bill got nod from Lok Sabha on Thursday. For about four hours the government and the oppositions have debated on this bill. Union Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad has stated this bill is not about politics but is to protect Muslim women rights who are being instantly divorced by men. minister in his arguments further said about 20 Islamic nations have banned ‘Triple Talaq’ and the honourable Supreme Court of India too termed it as ‘unconstitutional.’ As per the bill, men are entitled to three years imprisonment if found guilty.

TDP MP Jayadev Galla has expressed his views on the bill. He questioned who will provide the woman maintenance if the husband is in prison. The Guntur MP also said the ancient ‘Triple Talaq’ should come to an end but the latest bill should be reconsidered by the government of India. Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi did not stop the lower house approval. He argued that when homosexuality is decriminalized, why the government is criminalising Triple Talaq?

Congress MP Sushmita Dev claimed that this bill’s main intention is not to empower women but to punish Muslim men.

Congress, AIADMK and SP parties have staged a walked out during the voting while 245 Parliamentarians voted in its favour and 11 have voted against the bill.
